Privacy Policy

How visitor data is handled on victimnotsuspect.org. We collect no personal data directly. The information below describes what our hosting provider and analytics processor see, and how long they keep it.

Who we are

Victim Not Suspect (VNS) is a criminal justice reform organisation operating at victimnotsuspect.org. VNS is registered as a sole trader with VNS as a trading name. The data controller for this website is Lynette Denny, Founder, reachable at info@victimnotsuspect.org.

What data we collect

VNS does not collect personal data directly. We do not have account registration, comment forms, or newsletter sign-ups. Data collected when you visit this site includes standard server log data collected by our hosting provider (deleted within 72 hours), and analytics data collected by Google Analytics, both described below.

Google Analytics

This website uses Google Analytics 4 (GA4), a web analytics service provided by Google LLC. Google Analytics collects anonymised data about how visitors use this site, including:

  • Pages visited and time spent on each page
  • How you arrived at the site (search engine, direct link, social media)
  • Your approximate location (country and region level only)
  • Device type, browser and operating system

This data is collected using cookies placed on your device. It is processed by Google on servers which may be located outside the UK. Google Analytics does not collect your name, email address or any information that directly identifies you. IP addresses are anonymised.

Google's privacy policy is available at policies.google.com/privacy. You can opt out of Google Analytics across all websites using the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

Website hosting and server logs

This website is hosted by DreamHost LLC, 707 Wilshire Blvd Ste 5050, Los Angeles CA 90017, USA. DreamHost is the data processor for infrastructure and hosting services. When you visit this site, DreamHost's servers automatically record standard server log data including your IP address, the page requested, the time of the request, your browser type and the referring page. DreamHost confirms that raw web server log files are deleted after 72 hours. DreamHost also provides an aggregated analytics panel showing anonymised traffic summaries retained for up to 7 days. No individual visitor records are retained beyond 72 hours at server level.

DreamHost's privacy policy is available at dreamhost.com/legal/privacy-policy. DreamHost confirms GDPR compliance and encrypts server log files. Data may be processed on servers located in the United States. VNS relies on DreamHost's standard contractual commitments for international data transfers.

Cookies

This site uses the following cookies:

  • _ga and _ga_* - Google Analytics cookies used to distinguish visitors and track sessions. These expire after 2 years and 13 months respectively.

This site also uses browser localStorage (not cookies) to remember your accessibility preferences such as text size, contrast mode and dyslexia font. This data is stored only on your device and is never transmitted to VNS or any third party. You can clear it by clearing your browser storage. No other cookies are set by this website. You can control cookies through your browser settings.

Legal basis for processing

Analytics data is processed on the basis of legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f) UK GDPR). VNS has a legitimate interest in understanding how its content is used so it can be improved. The data is anonymised, so this processing does not outweigh your privacy interests.

Data retention

Google Analytics data is retained for 14 months, after which it is automatically deleted. DreamHost server log data is deleted within 72 hours. VNS does not retain any visitor data independently of these processors.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to access, correct or request deletion of personal data held about you. As VNS does not hold personal data directly, any such requests should be directed to Google in relation to analytics data. You can contact VNS at info@victimnotsuspect.org with any privacy questions.

Third-party links

This site links to external websites including parliamentary committee pages, HMICFRS publications, academic journals and news sources. VNS is not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites.

Changes to this policy

This policy will be updated if VNS changes how it collects or processes data. The date at the top of this page reflects when it was last revised.
