The six FACETS lenses, framing, archetypes, collective belief, expectation, themes, symbolism, are a framework developed at facets.digital. This page applies them as a hardcoded checklist against pasted text, drawn from published media and editorial guidance.
What this is, and what it isn't
FACETS is a framework from facets.digital, our companion site. This page is a deterministic pattern matcher that checks pasted text against 37 hardcoded phrases drawn from IOPC media guidance (March 2024), Mind / Time to Change, the Samaritans, Nils Christie (1986), Jennifer Freyd (1997 DARVO; 2014 institutional betrayal), the Centre for Women’s Justice and the Gemini Project. No AI is called. Nothing leaves your browser.
A clean result does not mean the text is good writing. It means the text does not match an item on this list. The six lenses are explained in full on facets.digital, and applied to news framing on Named frames.

The six lenses
- Framing. How presentation shapes interpretation.
- Archetypes. The roles people are cast into: hero, villain, victim, saviour.
- Collective Belief. Shared assumptions presented as fact.
- Expectation. What the framing leads a reader to anticipate.
- Themes. Recurring narrative patterns that give events moral shape.
- Symbolism. Loaded imagery and word choice that carry meaning beyond surface fact.
