Freedom of Information

How to Make FOI Requests

You have the right to request recorded information held by public authorities, including police forces. Your request must be in writing and clearly describe the information you want.

Avoid BCC-ing multiple forces in one email, as this can create confusion and lead to delays or refusals. Instead, submit each request individually to the relevant authority.

Round Robin Requests

Round robin requests are identical requests sent to multiple bodies. They are allowed, but each authority will process them separately. Be aware that if your request exceeds the time or cost limits, you may be asked to refine it.

Time and Cost Limits

Authorities have 20 working days to respond. If your request would exceed the cost limit (usually £450 for police forces), they can refuse it. You should be offered the chance to narrow or refine your request under Section 16 of the FOIA.
